Hudson Valley Loop
This figure-eight loop starts near the fairgrounds in Schagticoke, NY. A nice medium-length trip that wends its way through the foothills of the Green and Adirondack mountains, along the New York/Vermont border, then back down along the Hudson River. The beautiful countryside quickly unfolds in front of you as you head north on NY route 40. Large farms with picturesque barns and silos come in and out of view, with the mountains in the background providing the perfect canvas to paint this picture on. You’ll encounter very little traffic for long stretches as you travel past large estates, massive corn fields, and tiny roadside farm stands. The loop comes back around to the south and along the Hudson River. Be sure to stop by one of the locks on the Champlain Canal for a look at some vintage, but still highly functional machinery — lock C-7 is off of US 4 in Ft. Edward, NY. Or, take a trip through the fascinating Saratoga National Historical Park near Stillwater, NY — the site of the Battle of Saratoga, the turning point of the American War for Independence. Enjoy some of these destinations, but this journey is well worth the trip!
